Metabolite Identification
Common Name(+)-Aristolochene
Description(+)-Aristolochene is a sesquiterpene metabolite described in biomedical literature. It is produced through the action of terpene synthase genes, such as the mtas gene from Menisporopsis theobromae BCC 4162, which was heterologously expressed in Aspergillus oryzae NSAR1 to yield (+)-aristolochene (PMID:39869062 ). This compound has demonstrated selective antifungal activity, particularly against strains of Aspergillus fumigatus ATCC46645 and Candida albicans ATCC64124, with an effective concentration of 471 µM (PMID:38132955 ). Additionally, research has highlighted the facile production of (+)-aristolochene in Escherichia coli, utilizing newly discovered sesquiterpene synthases from Penicillium expansum, including PeTS1, which is identified as a new (+)-aristolochene synthase (PMID:35506591 ). These findings underscore the potential of (+)-aristolochene not only as a natural product of interest in the field of organic chemistry but also as a candidate for further exploration in antifungal applications.
