Metabolite Identification
Common NameCanthin-6-one
Descriptioncanthin-6-one belongs to the class of organic compounds known as indolonaphthyridine alkaloids. These are a numerous and relatively straightforward subgroup of the b-carbolines, e.g. Canthin-6-one, in which an additional C3 unit is attached between C-1 and the indole nitrogen to form an additional ring. The group includes a few dimeric examples, such as Haplophytine. canthin-6-one is a secondary metabolite. Secondary metabolites are metabolically or physiologically non-essential metabolites that may serve a role as defense or signalling molecules. In some cases they are simply molecules that arise from the incomplete metabolism of other secondary metabolites. Based on a literature review a small amount of articles have been published on canthin-6-one.
