Description2-MLCL(15:1(9Z)/0:0/16:1(9Z)/20:1(11Z)) is a monolysocardiolipin (MLCL). Monolysocardiolipins have three fatty acid tails instead of the usual four found in cardiolipins. The fourth acyl chain, located at the R4 position, is missing in 2-MLCL species. MLCL occurs in eukaryotic cells as part of the metabolic cycle of mitochondrial lipids. Removal of one acyl chain from cardiolipin generates monolysocardiolipin (MLCL). MLCL has been used as an intermediate in the synthesis of spin-labeled cardiolipins to study interactions with mitochondrial enzymes. Because MLCL is implicated in lipid remodeling and apoptosis, it has been used to investigate interactions with various enzymes involved in these processes. There are two positional isomers of monolysocardiolipins: 1-MLCL, which lacks a fatty acid at position R1, and 2-MLCL, which lacks a fatty acid at position R4.
