Upon staining with Gram's method, C. botulinum exhibits a characteristic Gram-positive staining pattern, meaning that the cell wall retains the crystal violet stain and appears blue under the microscope. The bacterium typically appears as a rod-shaped (bacillus) cell, often with a tendency to form chains or clusters. C. botulinum can be found in soil, water, and improperly sterilized food, and is capable of infecting various body sites, including the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory system, and nervous system. As an obligate anaerobe, it requires a low-oxygen environment to survive and grow, making it most commonly associated with wounds, abscesses, and other trauma sites. Despite its adverse effects on human health, C. botulinum has been employed in various pharmaceutical applications, such as the production of botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin used to treat conditions like cervical dystonia and blepharospasm. In the context of food poisoning, the bacterium's ability to produce botulinum toxin poses a significant risk to public health.
